2018 WGC-Mexico Championship Betting Preview (March 1-4)

Written by on February 27, 2018

The World Golf Championships include one of the highest tournaments in the world, as the Club de Golf Chapultepec has its clubhouse at an elevation of almost 8,000 feet above sea level. This is one of the more exciting golf tournaments on the pro tour, as the elite PGA players show up — and in each of the last four Sundays, the tournament has come down to a single stroke. In our golf odds preview for this tournament, we have picked five players for you to consider as you pick a winner for the weekend.

2018 WGC-Mexico Championship Betting Preview (March 1-4)

Jason Dufner

  • WGC-Mexico Championship Odds: +8000
Jason Dufner took home the trophy at the PGA Championship back in 2013 — but he only has two first-place finishes since then. He has been playing better as of late, finishing in the top 18 in four of his last five tournaments. He pushed the leaderboard hard in the Honda Classic a week ago. His consistency has also improved, as he has not missed a single cut since June of last year, when he went home early from the U.S. Open. At the WGC-Mexico Championship back in 2017, he finished in the top 25. So while those odds look awfully long, this could be a real value play for you.

Alex Noren

  • WGC-Mexico Championship Odds: +2500
When Alex Noren came to Chapultepec a year ago, he finished just 55th — and looked way off his game. However, he finished third at the Honda Classic and has finished higher in each of his last three tournaments. In scoring percentage, he ranks #2 in the PGA right now, and #20 in sand save percentage. That play in recent weeks makes him another potential value bet.

Thomas Pieters

  • WGC-Mexico Championship Odds: +5000
Thomas Pieters picked up a 13th-place finish at the Honda Classic and has made the cut in five straight tournaments. At Abu Dhabi, he came in fifth, and a year ago, he finished fifth at this tournament, putting up a -11 score over the four days. He’s definitely someone to keep your eye on as you think about value wagers for this tournament.

Tommy Fleetwood

  • WGC-Mexico Championship Odds: +1800
In three tournaments so far this season, Tommy Fleetwood has finished in the top 25 twice. At the Honda Classic, he came in fourth. He ranks third in the PGA in scoring average and 13th in driving accuracy percentage, and his last missed cut came all the way back in June at The Memorial. He almost took this trophy home in 2017, but he lost by a stroke to Dustin Johnson.

Dustin Johnson

  • WGC-Mexico Championship Odds: +600
Dustin Johnson won this tournament a year ago, and he is continuing to play well now. No one has fewer holes per eagle this year than Johnson, and he also leads the PGA in scoring average and birdie average. He has won this even twice (2015 and 2017) and he came in second back in 2011. Johnson, along with Ernie Els and Tiger Woods, are the only players to win this tournament more than once.

Paul Casey

  • WGC-Mexico Championship Odds: +3300
Paul Casey had a tough showing at the Genesis Open, as he could not break 70 in a round for the first time this year. He has finished in the top 12 in three of his five tournaments this year, including a seventh-place finish at the CIMB Classic, when he had to come back from an ugly 77 in the first round. Here are the rest of the top odds for the 2018 WGC-Mexico Championship:
  • Dustin Johnson +600
  • Justin Thomas +800
  • Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth +1200
  • Tommy Fleetwood +1600
  • Phil Mickelson +1800
  • Justin Rose +2000
  • Alex Noren +2500
  • Sergio Garcia +2800
  • Patrick Cantlay, Paul Casey +3300
  • Bubba Watson +3500
  • Thomas Pieters, Tyrrell Hatton +4500
  • Ross Fisher, Tony Finau, Webb Simpson +5000
  • Chez Reavie, Marc Leishman +5500
