NASCAR South Point 400 Odds and Betting Picks

Last week, AJ Allmendinger paid off on +1000 odds to win the Bank of America ROVAL 400 last week at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He led the race twice for a combined 46 laps, including the final 33, and he edged out William Byron by 0.666 seconds to pick up his first Cup Series win of 2023. This was also his first Cup Series win at Charlotte on the road course and the third Cup Series win of his career, all coming on road courses. Kyle Busch took third, two places behind the victory he needed to qualify for the Round of 8. Ross Chastain, Bubba Wallace, and Brad Keselowski also missed out on advancing to the next playoff round. The Round of 8 will include William Byron, Ryan Blaney, Tyler Reddick, Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, Chris Buescher, Kyle Larson, and Martin Truex Jr, who finished as the regular-season champion. This week, NASCAR heads to Vegas, and the Cup Series Round of 8 starts with the South Point 400, set for Sunday at 2:30 pm Eastern time. NBC will have the live telecast, or you can listen on PRN or SiriusXM. Read on to find our NASCAR Cup Series Odds analysis.

South Point 400 Race Lines

William Byron enters the NASCAR South Point 400 at the top of the playoff point standings, and he should probably be the odds-on favorite here. He won the last race on an intermediate track (Texas Motor Speedway), and he also won at Phoenix and Darlington in the spring, both quasi-intermediate tracks. In March, Byron also won the spring race here in Vegas, so if history is any sign, Byron is the best choice to win on Sunday.

Kyle Larson led the second-most laps in both of those races Byron won in Las Vegas and at Texas Motor Speedway. Larson was headed to a win in the spring Vegas race until a caution on Lap 264 (of 271) knocked him out of the lead. At Texas Motor Speedway, he led from Lap 143 to Lap 246, when a restart forced him to battle to get the lead back, and he wrecked. He has the right car, and he has the talent and motivation to get this win. In his last 11 races at Las Vegas, Larson has one win, six podium finishes, and nine top-ten results.

Denny Hamlin didn’t garner much notice during the NASCAR Round of 12. Basically, he was working ot survive to the Round of 8, and he made it through the ROVAL and TAlladega. Now, he should be ready to start pushing hard to get to the Championship 4. Hamlin has a Dietric Data score of 0.77 (out of a perfect 1.00) on the season, second among these eight drivers. At Texas earlier this season, he posted a 0.97, and at Darlington and Kansas, two other intermediate-track settings, he posted a 0.94.

Alex Bowman is an interesting value pick here. He’s not a playoff driver, but neither was Allmendinger last week. Bowman took third in the spring race at Las Vegas, and he won the whole thing here in the spring of 2022. The NASCAR playoff drivers have to play it safe in the opening race of the Round of 8, especially in the last laps of the race. Bowman doesn’t have to be careful, which means he can push hard, sacrificing points for the outside win.
