Holloway vs Korean Zombie

UFC Odds: Max Holloway (24-7, 20-7 UFC, -850) vs Jung Chan-sung (17-7, 7-4 UFC, +520)

Should be a spirited battle between two of the most ferocious fighters in MMA. Holloway doesn’t have a realistic shot at a title at this point, but fans of the sport still remember his domination of Jose Aldo that brought him the belt in 2017. He established the standard for high-volume striking that many fighters seek to emulate today. He lost two title bouts to Alexander Volkanovski, and despite his 2021 undressing of Calvin Kattar, Volkanovski won the trilogy fight in a five-round exhibition of punishment.

Jung has discussed retirement the last couple of years, most likely after UFC’s next event in South Korea. His debut, back in 2010, was a three-round battle against Leonard Garcia that still holds up as one of the best UFC fights of all time. He also fought Dustin Poirier in another highlight-reel bout in 2012, earning a title shot against Aldo in 2013. That fight saw Jung take a shoulder injury and end up getting finished. That (and Jung’s military service) kept him out of UFC until 2017, but he came back to knock out Dennis Bermudez. He got a title shot of his own against Volkanovski in April 2022, but Volkanovski was able to take advantage of Jung’s focus on counters. This time around, Jung doesn’t have the volume to keep up with Holloway.

Holloway vs Korean Zombie Final Prediction: Holloway wins via stoppage

Ryan Spann vs Anthony Smith

UFC Odds: Ryan Spann (21-8, 7-3 UFC, -130) vs Anthony Smith (36-18, 11-8 UFC, +110)

Is a rematch of a main event from 2021 which Smith won in a fast submission. That was Smith’s last win, though. When he came to the light heavyweight division in 2018, he got three wins in less than half a year to become the top contender to Jon Jones. Smith lost that fight but has become the gatekeeper for title contenders. When he wins, he finds an edge and exploits it quickly – as he did the first time around against Spann. When his approach doesn’t work, things can get ugly in his end.

Spann rarely sees fights last more than a round – either when he dismantles an opponent or gets routed. He has a huge reach at 6’5” but has not yet figured out how to turn that edge into control of a fight. He doesn’t use a lot of strategy, instead simply walking in and seeing what happens. He had put together a nice string of wins after that loss to Smith until Nikita Krylov triangle choked him in March. Smith might be on the downward arc of his career, but Spann hasn’t yet developed the strategy to take advantage of him.

Final Prediction: Smith via submission
