Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the semifinals after a wild second leg at the Etihad, losing 4-3 to Manchester City but advancing in the basis of those three away goals. City opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but Tottenham drew level three minutes later — and then took a 2-1 lead in the tenth minute. When City drew level in the 11th minute, it was clear that this would be a tensely contested match, and the City would move ahead, 3-2, in the 21st minute. The scoring would slow way down, though, until City went up 4-2 in the 59th minute. From that point, it looked like City would advance, until Tottenham got that third away goal in the 73rd minute and held on through a frantic exchange, and the aggregate ended up 4-4, giving Tottenham the edge. Ajax’s ability to advance against Juventus took even more derring-do, as they went to Turin and delivered a 2-1 win on the road. Matthijs de Ligt delivered a header in the 67th minute, as Ajax came all the way back from a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 and advance on the basis of aggregate goals, 3-2. Ajax is now in the semifinals of the Champions League for the first time in 22 years. Now these sides are set to meet for the first time ever in the opening leg of the semifinals on Tuesday.
