Tottenham vs Ajax 2019 Champions League Odds & Preview for Game 1

Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the semifinals after a wild second leg at the Etihad, losing 4-3 to Manchester City but advancing in the basis of those three away goals. City opened the scoring in the fourth minute, but Tottenham drew level three minutes later — and then took a 2-1 lead in the tenth minute. When City drew level in the 11th minute, it was clear that this would be a tensely contested match, and the City would move ahead, 3-2, in the 21st minute. The scoring would slow way down, though, until City went up 4-2 in the 59th minute. From that point, it looked like City would advance, until Tottenham got that third away goal in the 73rd minute and held on through a frantic exchange, and the aggregate ended up 4-4, giving Tottenham the edge. Ajax’s ability to advance against Juventus took even more derring-do, as they went to Turin and delivered a 2-1 win on the road. Matthijs de Ligt delivered a header in the 67th minute, as Ajax came all the way back from a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 and advance on the basis of aggregate goals, 3-2. Ajax is now in the semifinals of the Champions League for the first time in 22 years. Now these sides are set to meet for the first time ever in the opening leg of the semifinals on Tuesday. Can Ajax keep winning big on the road? Or will the Spurs cool them off? Take a look at our Champions League betting preview here.

Why should you bet on Tottenham?

Tottenham has taken two straight losses in English Premier League play since beating Manchester City in the Etihad to advance to the Champions League semifinals. They lost to City, 1-0, once again on the road, and then lost this past weekend at home to West Ham United, a fairly significant upset. The Ajax approach will be, once again, to deliver concerted attacks, again and again, and Tottenham has not shown that they have what it takes on the back line in their last two Premier League matches. It is worth noting, though, that Tottenham has played much better in their recent Champions League play than they have in Premier League competition. They were able to deliver against Manchester City, one of the top teams on the Premier League table, even though they fell off when it got back to regular league play. If you like the Spurs, you see them finding that motivation once again and beating a spirited Ajax side.

Why should you put your money on Ajax?

Ajax comes to England with some rest from the weekend, as the Dutch league shuffled its schedule to let Ajax prepare for their semifinal match. Both the English Premier Leauge and the Cutch league are entering their final weeks, making a break like this most helpful. One of the top players for Ajax has been Dusan Tadic, a Serbian national who has caused all kinds of problems up front with his speed. Daley Blind and Frenkie de Jong give Ajax a great deal of seasoning to go along with their young players. With road wins already coming in the knockout rounds at Real Madrid and Juventus, there’s no reason to think that Ajax would be intimidated coming to Tottenham. Ajax has come into each match in the knockout rounds as the underdog, and they keep knocking out established teams in European soccer. Tottenham does not have the pedigree in Champions League play that Real Madrid has, and Tottenham does not have a scary finisher on their side like Juventus does in Cristiano Ronaldo. If you like Ajax, you like them to ride that confidence right into another tough road win.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction for Tottenham vs Ajax

I like the momentum that Ajax has here, and I see them rolling to a 2-1 road win to put the Spurs on the brink going into the second leg.
