NY Giants at Dallas Cowboys NFL Odds & Betting Predictions for Week 1

Written by on September 9, 2017

The Dallas Cowboys take on the New York Giants for the 111th time this Sunday, as the two NFC East rivals meet on national television from AT&T Stadium. Dallas has won 62 of the meetings, while the Giants have won 46, with two games ending in ties — but the Giants have won the last three, including a 10-7 win last December. The Giants bring a high-octane offense and a retooled defense to Dallas, while the Cowboys have mostly held pat from a team that went 13-3 and won the NFC East a year ago. As of the, betting lines favor America’s Team over the Giants, but then again, the Giants have made the Cowboys suffer in their past encounters. So the NFL odds might shift a bit.

Why should you bet on the Giants?

The Giants benefited from Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott’s first-game jitters when they won the opener a year ago, and then they held him to 17-of- 37 throwing in the rematch, as he threw two picks and failed to throw a touchdown pass. The Giants have one of the more underrated defenses in the NFC, in large part because the offense under Eli Manning has such a habit of making crucial mistakes at just the wrong time. Dallas does not have the secondary to make him pay for those mistakes, though. Odell Beckham Jr. has yet to practice this week, with his ankle injury from the preseason continuing to linger, and he is questionable to start against the Cowboys on Sunday night. Without a doubt, he makes the Giants much more dangerous, as his speed would definitely lead to some opportunities to torch a Dallas secondary that lost three starters to free agency, with Jerry Jones opting to use backups and the draft to patch a unit together. Even without Beckham, the Giants should be able to move the ball enough against a shorthanded Dallas defense to generate points.

Why should you put your money on the Cowboys?

Dallas will have Ezekiel Elliott for this opener — although they may not have him for the next six games, depending on how Roger Goodell’s latest display of power plays out in the court system. The Cowboys still have the best line in the NFC, and if they are all working together, the Giants could have a hard time getting them off the field. The unit was suffering from some injuries when the teams met in New York last December, but despite the retirement of Doug Free, the Cowboys’ O-line looks loaded once again. This will give Prescott time to pass from the pocket and should allow receivers to do a better job of getting open than they did in the second game last year. Are the Cowboys a safe bet against the Giants? The problem for Dallas comes on defense. Their philosophy of signing players who come cheaply because of off-the-field issues continued to hurt them this offseason, as defensive ends David Irving and Randy Gregory both earned new suspensions because of failed drug tests. Irving will miss the first four games, while Gregory is already done for the season, as this was his seventh violation. The team did draft Taco Charlton to bring some additional pass rush, but if the Cowboys can’t get to Manning, this will be a long night.

Expert NFL Odds Pick and Final Score Prediction

I’m a big fan of the Dallas offense, but I see the Giants’ defense frustrating them just enough, while the Giants’ offense shreds the Dallas secondary. Dak Prescott could lead a wild comeback, like he did against Green Bay in the divisional round of the playoffs, but I see this one coming up short as well. I predict a 34-27 win for the Giants, leaving Dallas with more questions to answer on defense and the Giants in the driver’s seat in the division.
