Jets vs Browns TNF Week 17 Betting Odds and Score Prediction

Written by on December 28, 2023

Joe Flacco will take on his most recent team when he guides the Cleveland Browns offense against the visiting New York Jets on Thursday night. The Jets (6-9) are out of the playoff hunt and have even disgruntled Aaron Rodgers, who attempted to quiet critics by saying that the decision to activate him after his Achilles tendon rehab wasn’t his idea (despite being excited earlier this season about returning for a possible playoff run). Flacco has won three of four as the Browns’ starting quarterback, and at 10-5, the Browns could win the AFC North if they win out and the Ravens drop their last two. The Jets did beat Washington last week, 30-28, while Cleveland rolled over Houston, 36-22. Let’s break down this midweek AFC showdown between Jets vs Browns – and don’t miss our NFL betting prediction.

Why should you bet on the New York Jets?

The Jets have confirmed that Trevor Siemian will start at quarterback as Zach Wilson remains in the concussion protocol. He went 27 of 49 for 217 yards and a touchdown and a pick in the win over Washington last week. The real star in the Jets’ win was tailback Breece Hall, who ran for 95 yards and a pair of touchdowns while also picking up 96 receiving yards. Hall is the Jets’ top rusher despite only averaging 48.8 yards per game and finding the end zone just four times. Garrett Wilson leads the team with almost 64 receiving yards per game and has three touchdowns. Not surprisingly, the Jets rank 30th in the NFL with 15.4 points per contest despite hitting 30 last week.

The Jets’ defense has been solid but has taken on water in recent weeks, now 14th (21.0 points permitted per game). Linebackers C.J. Mosely and Quincy Williams have combined for 260 tackles, and Bryce Huff is the sack leader with eight. The team has a -8 turnover differential on the season, which is even more surprising given the team has 22 takeaways. If you like the Jets, you see their defense rising to the occasion and turning this into a grindfest, and then surprising the Browns on a late drive, either for the back-door cover or the win.

Why should you put your money on the Cleveland Browns?

A win clinches a playoff berth for the Browns, so there should be no lack of motivation on either side of the ball. Joe Flacco found Amari Cooper for 265 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns in last week’s win over the Texans, but it has taken four different starting quarterbacks for the Browns to find someone to unlock Cooper’s potential. Flacco has thrown for more than 300 yards in three straight games – but he has seven interceptions to go along with his 10 touchdown passes in his four starts.

In the absence of Nick Chubb, who went down early this season with an injury, Kareem Hunt and Jerome Ford have picked up some of the slack, but even Ford, their leading back, has not rushed for more than 30 yards in the team’s last two games. Tight end David Njoku leads the team in touchdown catches with six. Even so, the team has risen to tenth in scoring (23.0 points per game) while their defense ranks 12th, permitting 20.7 points per game. In yardage allowed, the defense ranks first, though (260.3). If you like the Browns, you see that defense getting all over Siemian, swiping some turnovers, and giving Flacco and the offense some short fields.

Jets vs Browns TNF Final Score and Prediction

Joe Flacco does have a Super Bowl win on his resume, even though that came a decade ago, so he knows what it takes to get to the pinnacle of a playoff run. If he can handle ball security against the Jets and lead some sustained drives against what will be a quality pass rush, then the Browns should be able to set the rhythm in this game and get the win. I predict a final score of Cleveland 23, New York 13.
