2023 NFL Division Odds to Win NFC South

NFL Betting Lines: According to NFL Network host Rich Eisen, New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is one of his top five players entering the 2023 season with a chip on his shoulder. Carr has had a difficult road in the league since leading the 2017 then-Oakland Raiders to the top of the AFC West before going down with a season-ending injury. Things got so bad that third-string quarterback Connor Cook had to become the first NFL quarterback in the Super Bowl era to make the first start of his career in a postseason game, a 27-14 loss to Houston. Carr has never been able to match the consistent play that he showed that season, blending brilliance with backbreaking turnovers. What will he do in New Orleans? We will see. Check out the NFL betting odds for each team in the NFC South to win the division crown along with some thoughts on the four teams.

The Saints lost Marcus Davenport, David Onyemata, and Shy Tuttle off the D-line via free agency, but they only added Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders in free agency. Those are both depth players, at least historically, rather than impact pass rushers or run stoppers. They drafted Bryan Bresee and edge rusher Isaiah Foskey in the first two rounds, so they should expect to join the front seven immediately. The offense should be better with Carr, but Andy Dalton was also a steadier hand at quarterback, less of a risk in terms of ball security but also less capable of turning in big plays.

The Falcons added Jessie Bates III via free agency to come in at safety, giving the defense an instant upgrade. Other additions on defense included interior defenders Calais Campbell and David Onyemata on the interior D-line, linebacker Kaden Elliss and edge rusher Bud Dupree. They’re still looking for upgrades at wide receiver, cornerback and impact edge rushers. Their run-first offense, with Desmond Ridder and Bijan Robinson, will chew up some clock, but they will need Ridder to be able to complete passes on second and third down to keep the ball moving.

The Panthers need to build around Bryce Young, and they started by adding tailback Miles Sanders and tight end Hayden Hurst. They haven’t had a quarterback post a passing grade of 70.0 or more since 2018, when Cam Newton and Kyle Allen did it. Bryce Young posted a 91.3 score at Alabama last season, and wide receiver Jonathan Mingo joins him from the Crimson Tide. Adding senior offensive assistant Jim Caldwell and senior defensive assistant Dom Capers gives them more staff members with head coaching experience. Also, they added Vonn Bell to bolster the secondary.

The Buccaneers traded away Shaq Mason, but they replaced him on the O-line with Matt Feiler via free agency and Cody Mauch in the draft. He could play tackle if needed, as Donovan Smith has left, but he could also play inside. On defense, they picked up interior lineman Calijah Kancey, who led all FBS interior defenders last year with an 18.1% pressure rate. Nose tackle Vita Vea will occupy the attention of opposing offensive lines, which could give Kancey room to cause mayhem. Tampa Bay also added YaYa Diaby, an edge rusher from Louisville, who has a lot of speed but needs some refinement for the NFL. And then there’s the question of Baker Mayfield, who made his Rams debut last year on just a few days’ notice but led an exciting comeback against the Raiders in prime time. Down the stretch, his play was uneven, but Mayfield is also on the same list that Eisen presented as Derek Carr, Mayfield has delivered under pressure before.
