Chiefs vs Broncos NFL Week 4 Lines & Preview

Written by on September 28, 2018

This coming week’s installment of Monday Night Football features a gem of an AFC West rivalry, as the Kansas City Chiefs head west to take on the Denver Broncos. Kansas City has come out of the gates red-hot, winning three in a row with wins over the Chargers, the Steelers and the 49ers. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has thrown 13 touchdown passes in those three games as the Chiefs have put up 118 points. However, they have also given up 82 points, showing that while they have a high-flying offense, they give up a lot too. Denver is 2-1, as they followed up a pair of comeback wins over Seattle and Oakland at home with a 13-point loss in Baltimore last week, giving them a -9 point differential despite that winning record. Which team will win in prime time? Check out our NFL odds preview of this matchup.

Why should you bet on the Chiefs?

The Kansas City offense has been terrific so far this season, which is why they are looking to go 4-0 — which would be the third time they’ve done that since 2013. Kareem Hunt is a solid running back, but he’s been flying under the radar thanks to the magic of Patrick Mahomes at quarterback. Mahomes has completed touchdown passes to nine different players, the sort of balance that makes the Chiefs almost impossible to defend. Given that the Broncos gave up 27 points to a much more pedestrian Baltimore offense last week, things look good for the Chiefs to get close to 40 points again this week. The defense in Kansas City has not been particularly solid. To be sure, they have had to play some stout offenses in the first three weeks, with three gifted quarterbacks. Now they face Case Keenum, who doesn’t quite have the arm that the likes of Rivers, Roethlisberger and Garoppolo have, but the Broncos have mounted comeback wins in the first two weeks of the season, so they have the mental strength to stay in games until the end. If you like Kansas City to cover here, you’re thinking they can overwhelm the Denver defense much like they have each of their first three opponents and count on big points to simply outscore the other side.

Why should you put your money on the Broncos?

Case Keenum has gotten off to a somewhat choppy start with the Broncos. He’s completed more than 60 percent of his passes but has just three touchdown passes to go along with five interceptions. He has a terrific trio of wide receivers, with established starts Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas, joined this season by rookie Courtland Sutton. Phillip Lindsay has picked up 198 yards in three games, leading a ground game that is putting up almost 145 yards per game. The Broncos’ offense got slowed down considerably in Baltimore last week, but the Chiefs haven’t shown the same sort of defensive starch that the Ravens have this year. On defense, the Broncos are allowing 340 yards and 23 points per game, with Von Miller leading the team with four sacks. Todd Davis is the team’s leading tackler with 21 stops. The Broncos couldn’t keep the Ravens in check, but they did lock down the Seahawks and the Raiders in their comeback victories. If you like the Broncos, then you think that home energy will help them slow down the warp-speed Kansas City offense.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction for Chiefs vs Broncos

The Chiefs have covered the spread in 12 of their last 16 road games and in seven of their last eight games overall. Denver has covered the spread just seven times in their last 27 games, and have failed to cover the spread in their last four games against Kansas City on their home field. I see the Chiefs’ offense continuing that domination and rolling to a 34-23 win over the Broncos.
