Purdue at #2 Michigan NCAAF Odds for Week 10

The Purdue Boilermakers (2-6) head to Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines (8-0) on Saturday night. If you just look at what Purdue has done this year, you might have no idea that this is actually a rematch of last year’s Big Ten Championship. The team lost their head coach to Louisville, and while Ryan Walters has brought excitement and energy, the losses the team suffered through graduation, moving onto the NFL, and the transfer portal would have made it hard for any coach to contend again in the Big Ten. Offensive tackle Daniel Johnson, who transferred in from Kent State before last season, is back from an ACL tear and will start against Michigan, making his 2023 debut. The Wolverines are embroiled in a sign-stealing scandal right now; that news did not stop them from rolling over Michigan State, 49-0, last week, but as the attention starts to wear on the locker room, it will be interesting to see if the Wolverines really can beat Purdue by more than four touchdowns. We have some NCAAF betting thoughts about this Big Ten matchup between Purdue vs Michigan for you to consider.

Why should you bet on the Purdue Boilermakers?

Purdue’s 2-6 start includes a three-game losing streak that they carry to Michigan. They lost at Nebraska last week, 31-14, getting their two touchdowns in garbage time. Hudson Card went 16 of 32 for only 100 yards with two picks and a touchdown pass, which went to Jaden Dixon-Veal. Devin Mockobee was the top rusher with just 42 yards. He did average six yards per carry as the team was behind so quickly that they had to focus on passing the ball. The defense had a tough time as the Cornhuskers, not known for their offensive prowess, picked up almost 300 total yards, including one 73-yard pass play that took advantage of broken coverage.

If you like Purdue, then you think that Michigan will have a hard time keeping the Purdue offense from producing. The Wolverines do have one of the nation’s best defenses, holding opponents near 200 yards per game. However, they lost to the last team that saw through their sign-stealing scheme and lost a barnburner to the TCU Horned Frogs in the CFP semifinals last year. If the Purdue defense can force some field goals or get stops earlier, and the offense can sustain drives, then the Boilermakers should be able to cover.

Why should you put your money on the #2 Michigan Wolverines?

Last week against Michigan State, J.J. McCarthy went 21 of 27 for 287 yards and four scores. Two of those touchdown passes went to A.J. Barner, who led the way in receiving with eight catches for 99 yards. Michigan only averaged 3.5 yards per carry, but Blake Corum did pick up 59 yards and scored on the ground. On defense, the Wolverines held the Spartans under 200 yards of total offense.

The wolverines need to get the running game off the ground early against Purdue to cover. That will allow for play-action calls that send the ball down the field and burn the secondary. Purdue likes to pass the ball, but Michigan has held teams to 141 passing yards per game. If you like Michigan, you see them blocking out the noise coming from their program’s scandal and taking care of business.

Purdue vs Michigan Final Score and Prediction

Given that the Boilermakers fell behind the Nebraska Cornhuskers by 31 points before putting together some scores against the Nebraska backups, it’s hard to see them doing any better against a much more powerful offense. I predict a final score of Michigan 45, Purdue 9.
