NCAA Basketball Betting: Teams to Bet On the NIT Tournament

NCAA Basketball Betting: Teams to Bet On the NIT Tournament

A good way for you to make some serious sports betting cash is to take advantage of imbalances in the point spreads in the NIT – the National Invitation Tournament. For those 68 teams that don’t make into March Madness, the NIT is a postseason tournament with 32 teams in it. You might have read that North Carolina opted to skip the NIT after learning that they did not make the NCAA tournament, but they didn’t have the resume to get in. There is plenty of top-shelf talent in this tournament, but point spreads can get skewed as they are often set on bettors’ ideas about the programs based on reputation, rather than performance. Let’s look at NCAA Basketball odds and four teams that could win this whole tournament – and some early point spreads that you can point your way.

NCAA News: 2023 NIT Preview

Rutgers was 35th in the KenPom rankings. They had wins over an NCAA tournament 1-seed (Purdue), a 4-seed (Indiana), as well as Michigan State and Penn State, also headed to the Big Dance. Their February was a bit uneven, but this is a team that can do some damage on defense, led by Clifford Omoruyi in the paint, and they will have a New Jersey-sized chip on their shoulder heading into the NIT.

Vanderbilt won 10 of their last 12 games of the season. They beat Tennessee and Kentucky. Their early conference play was not all that inspiring, but they had the resume-builders down the stretch.

Clemson finished 64th in the KenPom rankings. They beat Duke, who would win the ACC, back in January, limiting the Blue Devils to just 64 points. The team’s offense is a bit pedestrian, as center P.J. Hall could help some offensively minded guards, but the defense is ironclad.

Oklahoma State played in a Big 12 that had five ranked teams, and they were left out of the NCAA tournament. However, they have one of the best scorers in the Big 12 in Kalib Boone. If he can find his early-season touch, then the Cowboys could turn things around.

Villanova at Liberty

When: Tuesday, March 14, 8:00 pm ET | We’re waiting for this line to be set. Liberty is 18-14 ATS this season, and Villanova is 14-19. The first three rounds of the NIT are hosted by the higher-seeded team, and Liberty has been given a 2-seed. However, Liberty plays in the ASUN Conference, while Villanova is in the Big East. Villanova came in sixth in the Big East, though, and has had struggles on offense as they try to rebuild after Jay Wright. If Villanova is favored here, or if Liberty is favored by less than three, take Liberty to cover. Their gym will be raucous, and Villanova hasn’t really played well enough to earn postseason respect.

Yale at Vanderbilt

When: Tuesday, March 14, 9:00 pm ET | Vanderbilt has won six in a row at home. They are 19-15 ATS this season. However, Yale is 18-9 ATS. In more recent numbers, both teams have covered in eight of their last 10 games – and both teams have won 8 of 10. Of course, Vanderbilt’s wins have come against the likes of Tennessee and Kentucky. Vanderbilt’s gym has an unusual alignment, with the benches actually at the ends of the court, rather than on the side. The sightlines for shooters are unusual as a result, and the gym is loud. These are factors that Yale will struggle to deal with. If the line favors Vanderbilt by less than five points, take Vanderbilt to win and cover.
