The Indians may well be settling down into the same sort of offensive funk that kept them from contending last year. On Sunday, Mets starter Steven Matz fanned nine Indians over seven innings, only allowing three hits. Last year, the Indians tended to win if they could get dominating starts out of their pitchers, as their hitting was fairly docile all season long. Matz set the Tribe down in order three different times, and sailed through those seven innings in just 94 pitches. The Mariners send Wade Miley to the mound, and even though he got pounded in his first two starts by the Rangers, he struck out seven batters in each outing, and if he can keep pounding those K’s against a weaker hitting team, the Indians could struggle.

Carlos Carrasco heads to the mound for Cleveland after one of the most dominant starts of his young career. Last Wednesday, he set the Tampa Bay Rays down over eight innings, permitting just one earned run while striking out eight Rays. The Mariners have not shown a lot of offense since a couple of big wins over a week ago, and Carrasco has the stuff to keep them from piling up runs. Nelson Cruz and Robinson Cano have both cooled down after having huge opening weeks, and the Mariners need to start hitting again if they are going to keep pace in the AL West.
