You often hear it said that Rome wasn’t built in a day, which is a phrase often used by teams who get off to slow start at the beginning of the season. It is usually the teams carrying the highest online betting expectations who are forced to make such statements, and you have to wonder how long it is before we hear that sort of talk coming out of the Washington Nationals camp. If they don’t do well in their 4-game series with the Phillies, which starts on Thursday, they may have to start answering some questions.
At 2-6, the Nationals are already off the pace that they were expected to set in the NL East. They are just about everyone’s choice to win the division and represent the NL in the World Series, but the first week of the season was one that was definitely off script. They started out by losing 2 of 3 to both the Phillies and the Mets, and are in danger of being swept by the Boston Red Sox as I write this piece. Yes, they have injuries to contend with, and they will likely be fine, but this is a still a troubling start. The Nats will send Doug Fister to the mound on Thursday, and will be hoping for a performance as good as his first outing of the season. Fister threw 6.1 scoreless innings, but ended up with a tough no decision in a game that the Nationals eventually lost 3-2 to the Phillies.
The outlook on the coming season in Philadelphia was pretty bleak, but this team was quite competitive during the opening week, although the signs are that they are beginning to slide. They started out the season a very respectable 3-3 after facing the Nationals and the Boston Red Sox, but they have now lost 3 straight and are in danger of being swept by the New York Mets. You would normally say that it’s good news that Cole Hamels (0-1) is taking the mound, but he has had a pair of less than stellar starts to his season. Hamels has made it no secret that he wants out of Philly, and you have to wonder just how much that will affect his performances on the mound.
