Are the odds skewed? We see that there is a definite difference between the performances that the horses rendered in the qualifying races and the favorites on the list. Some of this has to do with the reputations of Bob Baffert (who has trained five Kentucky Derby winners) and Todd Pletcher, who has trained two. Baffert brings in three horses considered favorites: Roadster, Improbable and Game Winner), while Pletcher has a pair of his own contenders, further down the odds sheet, in Spinoff and Cutting Humor. Jockey Mike Smith will be looking for a third title of his own, and John Velazquez will also be vying for his third win at Churchill Downs. Did you know that favorites have won the Kentucky Derby in six consecutive races? Some argue that this has to do with the qualifying system, which keeps some horses that start quickly from advancing. Will the favorite win again? Or should you choose differently? Given the fact that Bob Baffert has won more Kentucky Derby titles than any other active trainer, and given that he has three different horses that are considered contenders in this race, his horses are going to draw a lot of money. If you’re going to pick a Baffert-trained horse, which one should you pick? Roadster has picked up a lot of momentum after beating Game Winner in the Santa Anita Derby upon his return from a throat operation. Game Winner has two 2019 starts and has been the runner-up in both. However, a lot of observers compare him to Silver Charm because of his hard finishes — and Silver Charm won the Derby and the Preakness 12 years ago. Then there’s Improbable, who pushed Omaha Beach hard in the Arkansas Derby, but who lacks focus both at the start and down the stretch. There’s plenty more to come with regard to preparing for the Kentucky Derby. Don’t miss the sport’s signature race.
