Why are there two different sets of Ryder Cup odds? Winning outright would mean taking at least 14 ½ of the 28 available points from matches. Lifting the trophy would mean winning outright as well as keeping the trophy. If the teams split the 28 points, then the United States would retain the trophy. The Ryder Cup has only ended in a tie twice, in 1969 and in 1989, but it has ended 14 ½-13 ½ on seven occasions, most recently in 2012, when Europe won in the United States.

Even if their FedExCup playoff results are terrible, they will head to Italy to represent the United States. Max Homa, Jordan Spieth, and Cameron Young should also be a part of the team. Young was right there at the end of the British Open for the second year in a row, and Homa had a solid major season and was terrific at the Presidents Cup. Spieth would be winning majors again if that putter would cooperate with him. But what about Justin Thomas? He is 16-5-3 in team competitions, so even though he missed the FedExCup playoffs after missing the cut at the 3M Open and falling just short of that 70th spot in the standings at the Wyndham Championship, he might be the best American team golfer ever. The last two spots, then, could end up in the hands of Collin Morikawa, who went 4-0-1 in the last Ryder Cup and went 2-1 at the Presidents Cup, and Rickie Fowler. Morikawa’s last solid PGA finish was T2 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Fowler almost won the U.S. Open and did take first at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. And what about Brooks DeChambeau? After he finished his last LIV tournament with a 61 and a 58 in the final two rounds, his form is outstanding.
On the European side, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy have clinched spots on the Ryder Cup team. McIlroy will be in his seventh straight Ryder Cup, and Rahm will play in his third. McIlroy has not finished worse than T9 in his last seven tournaments, and he has four Ryder Cup wins in his first six appearances. He has played in 24 Ryder Cup matches, with a dozen wins, eight losses and four halves, having earned 14 points. Rahm has played in eight matches in this tournament, and he has won four, lost three and halved one, for 4 ½ career points. Sepp Straka, Adrian Meronk, and Robert MacIntyre should end up with debuts after solid seasons on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, respectively. MacIntyre roared back with a 64 on Sunday at his home tournament, the Scottish Open, only to fall at the end to McIlroy.
