2019 Puerto Rico Open Odds & Preview

Written by on February 21, 2019

The 2019 Puerto Rico Open has returned to the PGA Tour after a one-year hiatus due to the damage from Hurricane Maria in 2017. Last year, the tournament organizers instead hosted a Pro-Am to raise money for hurricane relief and brought in more than half a million dollars. D.A. Points is the defending champion from 2017, and his -20 total score gave him the win by two strokes over Bill Lunde, Retief Goosen and Bryson DeChambeau. The weather forecast for the weekend includes windy conditions on Thursday and Friday, with possible showers on Friday, but with a drier weekend. Seven past major winners are in the field, including Trevor Immelman, Charl Schwartzel, David Duval, Todd Hamilton, Retief Goosen, Angel Cabrera, and Graeme McDowell. We have your golf odds as well as your sports betting preview for the tournament.

The course (Coco Beach) is a par 72, which plays long at 7,569 yards. However, there is not a lot of rough, and there is not a lot of water that comes into play, so the big hitters an unleash the drive without much fear of consequences. The wind can play tricks — as it might in the first two days of the tournament. When the weather settles down for the weekend, the 2017 mark of -20 could be in jeopardy. The hard part might be making the cut, though, with the tricky wind both Thursday and Friday and the possible rain on Friday. Even with the forgiving width of the fairways and the lack of water, the wind can push drives into areas where it is tough to get under par. So the cut could end up being relatively close to even par, while the winning total could be well into the double digits below par. Daniel Berger is the favorite and the biggest name in the field. He has not played consistently for about a year now, and he is looking for a solid finish to build momentum going into the main part of the season. However, he has never played on this course. Two of the other top favorites, Graeme McDowell and Peter Uihlein, don’t have the best momentum coming in either. McDowell has played here just one time — and missed the cut. Uihlein has missed the cut here twice — and made the top six twice. Scott Brown has been one of the more consistent players at Coco Beach, with five top 20 finishes in six appearances, and he won the whole thing in 2013. At the value that he offers, he’s definitely a smart betting pick. If you’re looking for a dark horse, start with Rafael Campos. He has cracked the top 10 here twice and picked up a win a few weeks ago playing on the Web.com Tour.
