2018 Wells Fargo Championship Preview & Golf Odds

The 2018 Wells Fargo Championship tees off on Thursday at Charlotte, North Carolina’s Quail Hollow Club, with Thursday and Friday rounds on the Golf Channel. On Saturday and Sunday, the Golf Channel will have coverage from 1:00 – 2:30pm both days (Eastern time), and then the action shifts to CBS until 6:00 each day. This was the same course where the PGA Championship took place last year, and Justin Thomas picked up his first victory in a major. Tiger Woods joins the field for the first time since the Masters, and he is looking for his first win in five years. Brian Harman is the defending champion of the Wells Fargo Championship, but the tournament was played at Eagle Point a year ago. This course is a 7,554-yard par 71, and a redesign last year turned the fifth hole from a par-5 to a par-4. Like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy has not competed since the Masters. However, his last three events have been solid, as he has cracked the top five twice. McIlroy ranks fifth on the Tour in driving distance, seventh in holes per eagle, and ninth in scoring average. No other player has won this tournament more than once, and he still holds the tournament record with a -21 score back in 2013. McIlroy ranks as the top favorite on the odds board, but those +750 odds still come with a great deal of value. And how about Brian Harman to repeat? Yes, the course has changed for the 2018 edition, but Harman has finished in the top 25 in two of his last three tournaments, and he has only missed one cut in his last 13 events. He ranks seventh in greens in regulation percentage and 16th in holes per birdie. His odds (+6000) are staggeringly high given some of those numbers, so he’s definitely someone to look at here. Tony Finau has elevated his game recently, as he has four consecutive finishes in the top 25. His last event was the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where he came in sixth. He can mash the driver, ranking second on the tour in distance. His scoring average is 13th overall, and he is ninth in holes per eagle. He only has won one PGA tournament, but given the high value on his +4500 odds, consider adding him to your list of wagers. Ryan Moore has finished in the top 10 in four of his last nine tournaments, and in the top 28 in each of his last four tournaments. He ranks seventh on the tour in driving accuracy and 15th in scoring average. When he played at the Wells Fargo Championship back in 2017, he missed the cut, but he has finished in the top 20 in three of his last five go-rounds here. His odds are at +5000, which makes him a legitimate dark horse. Webb Simpson has also played solid golf lately, with a fifth-place finish at the RBC Heritage. He currently ranks fourth in scoring average and fifth in sand save percentage. At the Wells Fargo Championship, he was the runner-up in 2015 and came in fourth in 2012. He has finished in the top 25 in four of his last six tournaments overall. His odds sit at +3300, so he’s another value wager to consider. Some other dark horses include Grayson Murray, Kevin Kisner and Louis Oosthuizen. Murray picked up some notice last year at the PGA at Quail Hollow, competing into Sunday, so this course could get him going again. Kisner and Oosthuizen have been playing well lately too. And what about Tiger Woods? Obviously, anything can happen, but we need to see him contending into Sunday before we start talking about him on wagering cards.
