The last week of PGA action before the game heads across the pond to Carnoustie for The Open Championship is the 2018 John Deere Classic, from TPC Deere Run in Illinois. This course is short (par 71) but also forgiving on the fairways, so accuracy off the tee is not the biggest deal here. The key comes on the short game, as many approach shots come with a wedge, which means that this course sees lots of low scores. In the last 10 years, seven champions have finished with a score of -20 or better, and the highest score over that time frame has been a -18. Zach Johnson offers +1200 odds, thanks in part to his consecutive top-20 finishes in the last two events he’s entered, and thanks to his #22 rank in scoring average on the Tour. He has finished in the top five in five of his last six appearances at TPC Deere Run, and he was the runner-up here in 2009, 2013 and 2014, winning the whole thing in 2012. This course is a little different from many of the PGA tracks, and that sort of course performance should push you to add him to your wager list. Francesco Molinari offers +1000 odds after winning the Quicken Loans National. He also took the first place trophy at the BMW PGA Championship a few months ago. In seven of his last nine tournaments, he has finished in the top 30, and he ranks #28 on the tour in greens in regulation percentage. He’s on a hot streak right now, and it would be a shame to miss out on that payoff should he find himself in the middle of another torrid weekend again. Ryan Moore is available at +1800 odds and won this event two years ago. He also cracked the top ten in 2012 and 2014. He has finished in the top 25 here in five of his last six appearances at TPC Deere Run. Last week, he made it into the top 15 at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, and he has finished at -7 or better in five of his last eight tournaments. He ranks #17 in scoring average and #3 in driving accuracy percentage on the Tour right now, so he’s definitely someone worth adding to your list. Johnson Wagner brings dark-horse odds to your betting list with a +6600 moneyline. He hasn’t won a tournament in more than six years, which explains the odds despite the fact that so many of the top players are not visiting TPC Deere Run this weekend. He has made eight cuts in his last 10 tournaments, and he is starting to show some more solid finishes. He took seventh place or better in three of his last tournaments at this course, and given the wide-open competition, he could jump right back to the winner’s circle. Wesley Bryan is slightly less of a dark horse, available at +4500 odds. He has made five consecutive cuts and finished in the top 30 in two of his last three events. He has played at TPC Deere Run twice, coming in eighth two years ago and finishing third last year. If he can catch fire at this tournament once again, that could end up putting a lot of money in your pocket. Bryson DeChambeau is the returning champion — but didn’t even crack the top 25 again the rest of the year. This year, he has finished in the top 10 seven times and in the top 25 10 times — and he won at Muirfield Village. Steve Stricker won this tournament three straight years (2009-2011) and leads all Tour players in earnings at TPC Deere Run. Joaquin Niemann tied for fifth at Greenbrier last week, giving hiim four top 10s in eight professional starts.
