F1 2019 Belgian Grand Prix Odds & Betting Preview

The summer break in Formula 1 has come to an end, and Spa-Francorchamps is set to host the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix this weekend. Red Bull has replaced Pierre Gasly with Alexander Albon on their senior team, who was with Formula E just a few months ago. Gasly got his start with Red Bull through their aggressive young driver program — and now his lack of results has seen him fall victim to that same aggressive philosophy. Ferrari comes in with zero wins in 2019 — but Belgium was the site of Sebastian Vettel’s last win, so there is some optimism in the midst of a dark season for the Scuderia. We have the F1 odds for each driver as well as thoughts about each team.

It has been several weeks since the last Formula 1 race in Hungary, where Lewis Hamilton cruised to victory more than a minute ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc. The main problem that Ferrari has had this season has been its performance with respect to mid-corner aerodynamic stability. The engines have been fine on the straights, but that is not where Formula 1 races are won or lost. The course in Belgium is slightly more favorable, with sectors one and three more forgiving in terms of lower aerodynamic performance, rewarding pure power.

What About Mercedes?

Mercedes still holds a commanding lead in terms of the Constructors’ Championship, but some challenges have come from Red Bull going into the summer break. Red Bull is using the Honda power unit that has proven unexpectedly strong, so after the first eight races went Mercedes’ way easily, Red Bull took some surprising points. While Hamilton looked strong in Hungary, his teammate, Valtteri Bottas, had a dreadful performance, his second-worst of 2019. There were rumors that the team was set to replace him with Esteban Ocon, but Mercedes is holding off on the switch for now. Bottas should have plenty of motivation, though, to tamp down the rumors and put together a solid race. That motivation, along with his betting value, makes him an interesting choice.

What About Red Bull?

We’ve already talked about Red Bull replacing Pierre Gasly with Alexander Albon. The fact that Red Bull was getting better results out of Max Verstappen but not out of Gasly was costing Red Bull points in the Constructors’ Championship. Verstappen has shown that he can win races outright, and Red Bull could catch and pass Ferrari in the Constructors’ table. Verstappen won two of the four races heading into the summer break, which has put him just seven points behind Bottas for second place in the Drivers’ Championship. Albon has interestingly short odds given his lack of exposure at this level. His car will have a spec 4 Honda power unit, and changing this engine will move him to the rear of the grid, making it difficult for him to win.

Who Should You Keep an Eye Out For?

Gasly will go back to Toro Rosso for this race, alongside partner Daniil Kvyat. He will have to change his approach quickly, as he now will drive the STR14. Carlos Sainz is one of the more interesting drivers for the middle pack of teams, as his finishes for McLaren have seen them climb the standings. He has eight points in the last nine races, and he could slip into sixth place in the driver standings. McLaren’s other senior driver, Lando Norris, made the podium in Belgium while racing in Formula 2 in 2018. However, he is walking in a boot after hurting his foot while watching the British MotoGP race last weekend, but reports indicate the boot is just a precaution. Can Norris podium in Formula 1? We will see.
