AAF Week 4 Betting Preview & Predictions

Written by on February 26, 2019

We have now seen three weeks of the inaugural season of the Alliance of American Football, and we’ve already had a major upset, as Salt Lake pulled off an eight-point win over Arizona. The Express and the Legends are still sitting at 0-3, while the Orlando Apollos are pulling away with the league to this point. We have your AAF Week 4 schedule for AAF play, set for Saturday and Sunday, as well as our AAF betting thoughts for each game.

AAF Week 4 Betting Preview & Predictions

Saturday, March 2

San Diego at Memphis (4:00pm ET, Bleacher Report Live)

San Diego (2-1) has a nice two-game winning streak, thanks to tailback Ja’Quan Gardner. He only had eight touches in the Fleet’s Week 1 loss, but since then he has run for 104 yards and then 121 yards in Week 3, scoring three touchdowns in the process. San Diego also has a salty defense, with 11 sacks and five interceptions, and they have permitted just 12 points per week. Nine different players had at least a half-sack in Week 3, and the team picked up seven quarterback hits. Memphis (0-3) liked what they saw when Zach Mettenberger replaced Christian Hackenberg under center last week, as he went 9 for 12 for 120 yards, two scores and a two-point conversion, as Memphis almost roared back against Orlando. The defense also stood taller last week. Can Memphis pull off the home upset over San Diego? AAF Week 4 Prediction: Memphis 20, San Diego 16

Orlando at Salt Lake (8:00pm ET, NFL Network)

Orlando (3-0) leads the AAF with 32.7 points per game, and while they didn’t beat Memphis by as much as we expected, winning on the road is not a common occurrence so far in this league. Quarterback Garrett Gilbert leads the AAF with 827 passing yards, and Jalin Marshall and Charles Johnson are in the top five in the league for receiving yards. Gilbert is also using his feet to make opponents miss, as he had a 21-yard scramble for a score in the win over Memphis. Salt Lake (1-2) finally got a complete game out of quarterback Josh Woodrum, and the offense responded. He went 22 for 31 for 178 yards, a touchdown and a two-point conversion. The tailback tandem of Branden Oliver and Joel Bouagnon gave the team a balanced attack, as they were able to run the clock and win the time of possession battle. Bouagnon ranks fifth in the AAF in rushing yards, and Oliver is seventh. No other team has a higher ranked pair of running backs. Can Salt Lake make it two in a row? AAF Week 4 Prediction: Orlando 30, Salt Lake 20

Sunday, March 3

San Antonio at Birmingham (4:00pm ET, CBS Sports)

Birmingham (3-0) has not had much in the way of strong opposition to this point on their schedule. They held a Christian Hackenberg-led offense scoreless in the opener (and Hackenberg is now on the bench). Then they played the Stallions — who had to use their third-string quarterback. Last week, they beat a Legends offense that can’t score. Tailback Trent Richardson is only averaging 2.5 yards per attempt — but he leads the AAF with six touchdowns. Luis Perez has not done much at quarterback, averaging just 5.8 yards per attempt. The Iron win thanks to their defense, which has generated nine turnovers in three games. San Antonio (1-2) has given up 68 points in their last two weeks, and their offense is still in flux, as they benched Logan Woodside (who is second in the AAF in passing yards) during play last week, bringing in Marquise Williams, who went 4 for 4 for just 21 yards and ran the ball five times for 33 yards. Can they move the ball against the Iron? And can they fix their defensive woes? AAF Week 4 Prediction: Birmingham 16, San Antonio 13

Atlanta at Arizona (8:00pm ET, NFL Network)

Arizona (2-1) lost quarterback John Wolford to injury last week. He had gone 14 for 22 for 127 yards, but the backup, Trevor Knight, went just 6 for 15 for 68 yards. Wolford is day-to-day with a back strain, so we’ll see who the Hotshots send out this week. Atlanta (0-3) might be the best medicine that Arizona could use. The Legends average just 4.4 yards per play on offense and 10 points per game, the lowest in the league. They have two touchdowns in three games — and ten turnovers. They have permitted a total of 92 points in three games, so they have major issues on both sides of the ball. AAF Week 4 Prediction: Arizona 17, Atlanta 9
