There are very few people who will argue that the SEC is not the best conference in college football, but even when you are very good, there are always a few teams who simply cannot hold up their end of the bargain. It’s tough to find seriously bad teams in the SEC, but there are a few who will struggle this coming college football betting season, let’s take a look at them.
The two worst teams in the SEC can be found in the East Division, with the bottom of the barrel being the Vanderbilt Commodores. Vandy got a little better under Coach James Franklin, and even posted a winning 5-3 SEC record back in 2012. The Commodores made it to three consecutive bowl games with Franklin in charge, but took an immediate step back after he moved on. Last season was the first of the Derek mason era, and the Commodores responded by going 0-8 in SEC play. I don’t expect that record to get much better this season.
The Kentucky Wildcats managed to put together winning seasons from 2006 to 2009 with Rich Brooks in charge, but things went downhill fast when Joker Phillips took over, with 6-7, 5-7, and 2-10 seasons on the books under his charge. Mark Stoops will be heading into his third season as the coach of Kentucky, and he has seen an improvement with each passing season. That said, it’s tough to see this team doing any better than the 5-7 record they posted last season.
The SEC West is arguably the best division in college football, so finding a team over that that falls into the “worst” category is not that easy. Texas A&M are considered the team most likely to finish at the bottom of the heap over there, with Mississippi State also candidates to be in the cellar. The fact that both of those teams might well be among the most competitive in other conferences tells you just how deep the talent pool is in the SEC.
