The Virginia Tech Hokies head down to sunny Florida this Wednesday to take on the #11 Miami Hurricane in ACC basketball action. The Hurricane (20-4) are in second place in the ACC right now and are coming off a nailbiter of a win, having knocked off Florida State on the road, 67-65. The Hokies (13-12) are fading near the bottom of the ACC cellar, having dropped six of the last seven, including a 67-49 loss at #7 Virginia this past weekend. I wouldn’t recommend taking the Hokies straight up unless you know about a plot to put some strong laxatives in the Miami water cooler before the game, but I would take a look at the point spread. Miami has been winning lately, but they haven’t been winning by a lot. If the spread is 10 or 12 points here, I might take a hard look at Virginia Tech. Remember — they did beat Virginia at home, and they have some other impressive conference wins, most recently against Georgia Tech. They have been on a dreadful streak lately, but if Zach LeDay and Seth Allen can find some open space early on, they could test Miami early and keep the game close.

Miami’s win over Florida State was a tough, gritty accomplishment. It’s true that Florida State is further down the table, but this is one of those in-state rivalries where you take all of the standings out of the picture and simply prepare for a war. Miami lost by one here last year, and they went the last 4:23 of the game without a field goal this past weekend, but they were still able to win. They are now behind North Carolina by just a game in the ACC standings, having won four straight and seven of their last eight. They now have four 20-win seasons in Jim Larranaga’s five seasons coaching the team. Sheldon McClellan led the way again for Miami against FSU, putting 20 points on the board, including a late 3 to give them a six-point lead. That was their last field goal, but they would knock down 4 of 5 free throws to seal the win. I expect them to have a much easier time at home against a struggling Hokies team. Why Should You Bet on Virginia Tech?
