Top College Bowl Betting Picks of the Week – December 24th Edition

Written by on December 24, 2018

We’re almost to the two national semifinals this coming Saturday, with Clemson taking on Notre Dame and Alabama playing Oklahoma, but between now and then there are still quite a few of the lower-tier bowl games for your sports betting consideration. Some of our bowl picks to this point have been spot-on (such as our predictions about Fresno State, North Carolina A&T and Marshall), while others (such as Middle Tennessee) have come up a little short. Here we have three more college bowl betting picks for you to consider in the days leading up to the first round of the College Football Playoff.

SERVPRO First Responder Bowl (Cotton Bowl, Dallas)

  • Boston College (+2) vs Boise State (1:30pm ET, ESPN)
Boston College finished the season on a three-game losing streak after gaining ranked status in the early going. They finished 7-5 (4-4 ACC), thanks to a 20:9 TD:INT ratio from Anthony Brown. Tailback A.J. Dillon still remains questionable to the game thanks to an ankle injury, and the team would miss the talent that brought him 1,108 yard and ten scores. The team has scored 32 points per contest this season. BC finished with three tough opponents, losing at home to Clemson by 20 and then falling at Florida State by one and losing at home to Syracuse by 21. They face a Boise State team that went 10-3 (7-1 Mountain West). However, they lost their last game to Fresno State, losing by three points in overtime. Quarterback Brett Rypien has thrown for 3,705 yards and 30 scores against just seven picks, and tailback Alexander Mattison has rumbled for 1,415 on the ground, scoring 17 times. Boise State also scores in bunches, putting more than 35 points per game. Given the momentum that the Broncos have, they make sense as the pick with this tight line. 2018 College Bowl Betting Prediction: Boise State 34, Boston College 27

Quick Lane Bowl (Ford Field, Detroit)

  • Minnesota (+3.5) vs Georgia Tech (5:15pm ET, ESPN)
Minnesota finished the season with a 6-6 record, but they had some notable wins, including victories over Wisconsin and Purdue. However, they also fell to Illinois and Maryland, so they didn’t live up to that promise as the season wound along. In the win over Wisconsin to wind up the regular season, Minnesota got 121 rushing yards out of tailback Mohamed Ibrahim, and a touchdown. Georgia Tech comes in at 7-5 and runs the triple option, which is an unusual offense and often gives defensive coordinators headaches. Their most impressive wins this season came against Louisville and Miami (FL), but their most disappointing losses came against Pittsburgh and South Florida. The Yellow Jackets lost at Georgia in their season finale, falling 45-21 as the Bulldogs largely shut down their offense until garbage time. I like Georgia Tech to win and cover given their option style. 2018 College Bowl Betting Prediction: Georgia Tech 27, Minnesota 20

Walk-On Independence Bowl (Independence Stadium, Shreveport, LA)

  • Temple (-3.5) vs Duke (1:30pm ET, ESPN)
Temple finished with an 8-4 record on the season, beating such impressive foes as Cincinnati and Houston but also losing to FCS foe Buffalo, as well as Villanova. Temple finished the season with a win over Connecticut despite an iffy day from quarterback from Frank Nutile, who threw for 184 yards and an interception. On the whole, though, Temple’s offense improved over the course of the season. Duke went 7-5 on the season, with impressive wins over Army, Northwestern and Miami (FL), but they suffered disappointing losses to Wake Forest and Pittsburgh. Daniel Jones threw for 145 yards, a score and a pick. On the whole, Duke fell off from their performance a year ago. 2018 College Bowl Betting Prediction: Temple 27, Duke 17
