2023 Florida State Football Betting Guide for the Season

2023 Florida State Football Betting Guide for the Season

Mike Norvell finished his third season coaching the Florida State Seminoles last year, and the improvement continues as the team posted a 10-3 record. In 2023, quarterback Jordan Travis is poised to lead a talented offense, and most of the key defensive starters are back. The Seminoles are on the short list of teams projected to come out of the ACC with a shot at the College Football Playoff. The season begins in Orlando against LSU, and if the Seminoles can get that win, momentum will build from Week 1.

Let’s look at the Seminoles’ upcoming season from a Florida State college football betting perspective, breaking down the different phases of the game.

2023 Florida State College Football Betting Guide for the Season

Explosiveness on Offense

Last year, the Seminoles scored 36.1 points per game, 16th in the nation. They gained 484.2 yards per contest, 10th overall. They lost two starters on the O-line, including All-ACC guard Dillan Gibbons, but Jeremiah Byers (UTEP), Keiondre Jones (Auburn) and Casey Roddick (Colorado) all came via the transfer portal and should contribute. Travis was second-team All-ACC at quarterback, throwing for 3,214 yards and posting a 24:5 TD:INT ratio. Wide receiver Johnny Wilson, at 6’7”, caught 43 balls for 897 yards and five scores a year ago, and he returns as a top target. Keon Coleman transferred in from Michigan State to add depth at receiver, and Trey Benson (990 rushing yards, 6.4 yards per attempt, 9 TD) is back to key the running game.

Stability and Speed on Defense

Jared Verse was first-team All-ACC at defensive end, and he returns with starting defensive tackle Fabien Lovett Sr. Braden Fiske (Western Michigan, Gilber Edmond (South Carolina) and Darrell Jackson Jr (Miami-FL) have all transferred in to join the front. Patrick Payton, ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, posted five sacks, second ti the nine that Verse notched. The biggest loss is Jammie Robinson, the first-team All-ACC safety, but the defense has both starting linebackers and the other four starting defensive backs all returning. Fentell Cypress II, an All-ACC corner at Virginia, transferred in; these additions should help a defense that only permitted 20.6 points per game last year, 20th in the nation.

Starters Returning on Special Teams

Ryan Fitzgerald returns at kicker in 2023, but the hope is that he will have improved during the offseason. In 2022, he attempted 20 field goals but only made 12 after making an adjustment to his technique. He switched back to his original style at the middle of the season and improved, but Tyler Keltner (ETSU) transferred in after a season in which he made 18 of 23 field goals and was named all-conference.

Alex Mastromanno is the starting punter once again, entering his fourth season. Mycah Pittman, the return specialist, ranked 15th in the nation, averaging 9.4 yards per punt return, but he had hip surgery in March and then left through the transfer portal to Utah.

The biggest matchup on Florida State’s ACC slate is a date at Clemson. Ever since the Tigers lost Trevor Lawrence to the NFL, Clemson has not been able to find a dominant solution at quarterback. Their defense remains elite, though, so the Seminoles will need to find ways to break through to win up at Death Valley. A date at Wake Forest and a season-ending trip to Florida will also be challenging, but you can’t get to the CFP without taking down some tough teams, and the Seminoles have the units on both sides of the ball to do it.
