Cincinnati, BYU, UCF, and Houston have entered the Big 12, and the conference slate begins on September 16, when TCU, last year’s Big 12 runner-up, visits Houston. What will we see from TCU this year? Last year, they rode a combination of boldness and luck through a Big 12 slate dotted with bad defenses and backup quarterbacks all the way to the College Football Playoff, and then they met a Michigan team that kept handing them points for much of the first half of the national semifinal, so they never really met reality until the national championship, where they lost to Georgia in historic fashion. Can they put the pieces back together and start another big run, or is the team’s magic gone with the departure of quarterback Max Duggar? They visit Houston in their Big 12 opener, and their third game overall, after facing Colorado and Nicholls State to start 2023. Dana Holgorsen will have a track-meet offensive game plan, and TCU’s coach Sonny Dykes has never been a defense-first coach. We’ll know a lot more about TCU after their opening matchup with Colorado, but for now, I like Houston to cover.

UCF Knights at Kansas State Wildcats

Gus Malzahn went to UCF possibly expecting to lead the Knights to an unbeaten season, but after going 18-9 over the last two years in the AAC, we will see if the Knights can maintain their spot at or near the top of the conference standings. One team that will have a lot to say about that is Kansas State, as the Wildcats won the Big 12 last year, beating TCU in overtime in the conference championship game. They went on to lose by 25 to Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, but losing to Texas by seven and to TCU by ten in the regular season (playing a backup quarterback in both games) was nothing to be ashamed of. While Texas and Oklahoma get most of the press this season, Kansas State is a team that will be right at the top of the standings once again. I like them to cover at home against UCF.

The backdrop is the State Fair of Texas in Dallas, and the 93-year-old Cotton Bowl is split down the 50-yard line between burnt orange and scarlet-clad fans. Heavy favorites have come into this game and had their national championship hopes dashed, and big underdogs have fought until the last snap in this matchup. If either team is favored by more than a touchdown, I would take the underdog to cover.

Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma State Cowboys

The Bedlam rivalry will come to an end after the 2023 season, and Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy has nothing but vitriol for the departing Oklahoma Sooners. The Cowboys got a rare win in this matchup two years ago, but they lost in Norman last year, 28-13. The Sooners had figured out this, somewhat, on defense by the end of the season, and the Cowboys had a major dropoff after making it to the brink of the College Football Playoff in 2021. Expect Stillwater to be a raucous scene for this game, and expect Gundy to empty the bag of tricks. The Sooners may be favored, even on the road, and if that’s the case, take the Cowboys to cover.
