The Boise State Broncos and the Oregon Ducks tangle in the Las Vegas Bowl on Saturday afternoon. Boise State won the Mountain West Conference championship on December 2, taking down Fresno State, 17-14, in the title game. Oregon ended the season on a two-game winning streak, rolling up 69 points on Oregon State in their Civil War rivalry game on November 25. The two teams have met one time, back in 2009, with Boise State winning at home, 19-8, in Week One of that season. Take a look at our College Football lines preview of this matchup between the MWC champ and one of the Pac-12 also-rans.

Why should you bet on the Broncos?

Boise State prevailed in a squeaker against Fresno State, marching 90 yards down the field in just seven plays to score the winning touchdown with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. The statistics were close, with Boise State only gaining 55 more yards than Fresno State. Both teams had 19 first downs. Boise State did have the game’s only takeaway. That defense stood tall against Fresno State, and the team ranks #35 in the nation, permitting just 22.5 points per contest. On the offensive side of the ball, Brett Rypien (son of former Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien) has had a solid year, throwing for 14 touchdowns against just four interceptions. However, the team only averages just over 250 yards per game through the air, as they pursue a balanced offense, averaging over 145 yards per game on the ground. Tailback Alexander Mattison had rolled up 1,074 yards and a dozen touchdowns on the season. Despite the fact that their offense does not always roll at full efficiency, the fact that the Broncos have won 10 games this season is a testament to the clutch timing of their scoring when it happens.

Why should you put your money on the Ducks?

Oregon goes into the bowl season without head coach Willie Taggart, who bolted for Florida State after just a year leading the Ducks. Mario Cristobal will serve as interim coach — and given the fact that Taggart was just on campus a year, his departure should not have the same emotional impact that it would if he were dealing with seniors he had recruited and had played for him for multiple years. The Ducks showed that their offense is still explosive against Oregon State, rolling up 577 yards of offense and 28 first downs. The defense even got in on the scoring, taking an interception all the way back to the house. The explosion on offense against Oregon State was typical for the Ducks this year. They ran for 268 yards per game on the ground, eighth in the nation, and they scored 36.7 points per game, good for 18th in the nation. Justin Herbert threw for 1,750 yards and 13 touchdowns against just three picks. He also ran for 166 yards and five scores, but his season was cut short by five games thanks to a broken collarbone. Tailback Royce Freeman has paced the running game with 1,475 yards on just 244 carries and 16 scores.

Expert Pick and Final Prediction

Oregon could view this game as more of a letdown after failing to compete in the Pac-12 North. Boise State comes in with more motivation to take down a Power 5 conference school. I think the Ducks will have what it takes to pull off the win, but this spread is just too large for the Ducks to cover. I predict a final score of Oregon 41, Boise State 37.
