2020 Sanderson Farms Championship PGA Tour Preview

2020 Sanderson Farms Championship PGA Tour Preview

Written by on October 1, 2020

This week, the PGA Tour has set up shop in Jackson, Mississippi, at the Country Club of Jackson. The course features Bermuda greens and runs 7,461 yards, set up as a par 72. When it comes to picking a sports betting strategy, it is important to consider the greens. In 2019, they tended to play fast, so understanding how to handle that dynamic will be even more important than nailing fairways off the tee and finessing approach shots. At this tournament, previous winners have gained significantly in Strokes Gained: Putting. Those putters who thrive on Bermuda grass should feature in your picks, as should players with solid stats in ball-striking and par 4 efficiency on holes between 400 and 450 yards.

We have the PGA contender odds (+10000 and better) as well as suggestions for your wager cards.

Sam Burns had a difficult Saturday last week, but the other three days were terrific. He hit 81 percent of fairways and 83 percent of greens in regulation on those three days. Burns is also a terrific putter on Bermuda grass. Of the golfers in this field, he is in the top 12 in Strokes Gained: Total at the Country Club of Jackson over the last five years. In 2018-19, he was tied for third in that metric, and he has made each of the three cuts in play here.

Doc Redman has been hitting the ball well lately. Since the PGA restarted play, he is third in this field in approach and 28th off the tee. In his last three events, he has a pair of top-three finishes (although he missed the cut at The Northern Trust). Since June, he is tops in this field in par efficiency on holes between 400 and 450 yards.

Bud Cauley has cracked the top 15 in twl of his last three events, and over his last five tournaments, he has gained 3.4 strokes on average tee-to-green. Putting on Bermuda grass is in his wheelhouse. He has played terrific golf on courses designed by Donald Ross; the Country Club of Jackson wasn’t a Ross course but has been designed to mimic his style.

Henrik Norlander is an interesting sleeper here. He has missed the cut in each of his last three tournaments, but he has shown that he can turn it on, coming in sixth at the Memorial in July and 12th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic — played on a course designed by Ross.

Brian Harman has had a solid couple of months as of late, finishing in the top 15 in two FedEx Cup tournaments. He also prefers Bermuda grass, and he is an interesting addition on a weekend when none of golf’s top names are in the field.

Will Zalatoris came in sixth at the U.S. Open and eighth at the Corales Championship. He was the favorite in the Corales, so one might think he underperformed. However, going into Sunday, he knew he needed a top-ten finish to qualify for the Sanderson Farms Championship, and he shot a 65 with no bogeys, allowing him to climb the leaderboard. He’s playing here for PGA Tour status. Also, his iron play is a strength — and a major asset on this course.
