French Open Betting Analysis Before the Tournament Begins

Written by on May 12, 2022

On Sunday, May 22, the 2022 French Open will get underway and run all the way to Sunday, June 5, when the men’s singles final will bring the tournament to a close. Novak Djokovic is the defending men’s singles champion after dispatching Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final last year, coming back from a two-set deficit to take the win. Barbora Krejcikova is the defending women’s singles champion, having beaten Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets to take the title. If you are planning to include tennis’ clay court major in your Tennis betting the next few weeks, take a look at some of our thoughts.

Tennis News: French Open Preview

The last time the top seed in the men’s singles draw at any Grand Slam was someone other than Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, or Rafael Nadal, the year was 2004, when Andy Roddick went into the Australian Open with the top seed before falling in the quarterfinals. Djokovic is currently ranked #1, but his performance at the Italian Open could cement that ranking, or it could cause him to lose it. He leads #2 Daniil Medvedev by 270 points, but he would need to get at least to the semifinals in Rome to hold onto that top ranking. Djokovic has made the quarterfinals, but if he loses that match, Medvedev would get the top ranking. Medvedev is also expected to play at the Geneva Open ahead of Roland Garros, but his performance there will not affect the French Open draw, as that will take place before the end of the tournament in Geneva.

Alexander Zverev looks set as the #3 seed at the French Open, but an interesting scenario would have Djokovic, Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, the three favorites, on the same side of the draw. The only way to avoid this would be for these three to have three of the four top seeds, which would not happen unless some of the top players withdraw. Rafael Nadal and Tsitsipas are neck-and-neck for the fourth seed, and it will depend on how the two fare in Rome. Whichever player has the better result at the Italian Open will have the fourth seed in the French Open.

Alcaraz, just 19, won his second Masters championship at the Madrid Open and sits at #6 in the world rankings. He is not in the Italian Open, instead focusing on Roland Garros, but even if he won the French Open, he still has a way to go to get the #1 world ranking. As well as he has been playing, though, it might not take him long to swipe that top spot.

On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek is projected to come in as the top seed. Krejcikova, the defending champion, is projected to get the second seed. Krejcikova won as an unseeded competitor a year ago, then ranked 33rd in the world. Since 2017, three unseeded women have won the title; along with Krejcikova, Jelena Ostapenko (2017) and Swiatek (2020) have snagged titles without seeds in the tournament. The lesson for sports bettors is that the women’s singles draw is extremely unpredictable, and players can come out of nowhere to make deep runs and even take titles. This lack of predictability makes sports betting extremely volatile…and rewarding if you happen to pick right.
