Giants vs Vikings NFL Betting Odds & Predictions for Week 16

Written by on December 22, 2022

The Minnesota Vikings must still be tired after their historic comeback last week, as they went into the locker room at halftime down, 33-0, to the Indianapolis Colts. During the intermission, cornerback Patrick Peterson got up and promised the offense that the defense would shut down the Colts, telling the offense, “You just need five touchdowns. That’s nothing.” Even late in the third quarter, the Vikings were still down, 36-7, but Kirk Cousins put up 460 yards and four touchdown passes to lead the team back to tie the game at the end of regulation, and then Greg Joseph kicked the game-winning field goal with three seconds left in overtime. Next up is a visit from the New York Giants, who started out 6-1 but have since gone 2-4-1, with the only wins coming over Houston and Washington. Let’s break down this matchup between possible NFC playoff opponents as you plan your NFL betting for the weekend.

Why should you bet on the Giants?

Brian Daboll continues to make his case for Coach of the Year, as he has a team in the middle of a rebuild in the playoff conversation. Last week against the Commanders, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones came in with a career 0-9 record in prime time contests, and the Giants had dropped 11 straight under the lights, but he delivered this time, and it was with his arm that he made his mark. He went 21 of 32 for 160 yards and put several throws into tight windows with success. He led an 18-play touchdown drive before halftime that ran 97 yards and bled 8:35 off the clock.

Saquon Barkley broke out with 87 yards on the day, including the three-yard touchdown that finished that extended scoring drive. During the previous four games, when the Giants went 0-3-1, he had only managed 152 yards total. Jones needs to continue to succeed through the air to take defensive pressure off the running game. The Giants have the defense to slow down the Vikings, but they will need to manage enough scoring drives to keep up with the skill position talent that Minnesota brings on offense.

Why should you put your money on the Vikings?

Since 1930, the NFL has seen 1,551 regular season and playoff games. In only two of those games has a team trailed by at least 30 points but still come back to win. The first happened in 1992, when the Houston Oilers led the Buffalo Bills, 35-3, in a playoff game before losing, 41-38, in overtime. The second happened last week. The Colts’ 33-point first half against the Vikings was not all about offense; the Colts had a defensive touchdown and a special teams touchdown in the first half.

We’ve seen that the Vikings can score in bunches, but they can also get run off the field, as we saw when Dallas came to town. The Giants should have room to operate on offense, so the Vikings will need to deliver when they have the ball to win this as well. K.J. Osborn had a breakout game last week, with 157 receiving yards, giving the Vikings a third target at wide receiver along with Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson. The Giants do permit the third-most rushing yards in the league, so handing the ball to Dalvin Cook would be a smart decision.

Final Score and Prediction

The Vikings have the edge at just about every skill position on offense, although Saquon Barkley and Dalvin Cook are both difficult running backs to bring down. With that advantage, the Vikings should be able to deliver the win at home, especially just a week after the lesson of what happens when you start a game slowly. I predict a final score of Minnesota 27, New York 20.
