With the Tokyo Olympics about to open, the fields in these tournaments are somewhat limited, but you can still find some intriguing picks.

Tennis News: ATP 250 Events: Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag / Mifel Open / Swiss Open Gstaad

Swiss Open Gstaad

Four of the top 20 ATP players will take the court in Gstaad, along with tenth-ranked Denis Shapovalov. This is a clay court event with a prize pool of about 419,000 euros. Roberto Bautista Agut, Cristian Garin and Casper Ruud are the top four seeds, each receiving a bye to the second round. Federico Delbonis, Laslo Djere, Feliciano Lopez and Benoit Paire are the rest of the top eight seeds, and hometown favorites Leandro Riedi and Dominic Stricker have been issued wild cards.

In the top half of the draw, Shapovalov makes his first appearance on the tour since falling to Novak Djokovic in the semis at Wimbledon. He will get either a qualifier or Johan Nikles, who is ranked #435 in the world. Alex Molcan, ranked #160, is an interesting dark horse in the top of the draw after making the final at the Belgrade Open, where he fell to Djokovic. Lopez meets Marc-Andrea Huesler in the first round; Huesler won their match in Kitzbuel. Shapovalov should come out of this quarter of the draw, even if he has to meet Melcan in the quarterfinal. Casper Ruud is the third seed after making it to the semifinals of the Swedish Open. Ruud is a clay specialist who could make a deep run himself, perhaps even beating Shapovalov in the semifinals.

In the bottom half of the draw, Bautista Agut and Garin will battle things out. Garin only got to the quarterfinals at the Swedish Open and would like to make a deeper run here. Juan Manuel Cerundolo is a good value pick because of his expertise on clay. Leandro Riedi, the wild card player, made it to the finals of the junior French Open a year ago, so he has clay skills and could surprise some players.

Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag

There are no players out of the ATP Top 40 in this event, but the competition is higher here than in Gstaad because of the parity. Also a clay court event, the tournament features Albert Ramos-Vinolas as the top seed, but he is the third betting choice behind Filip Krajinovic and Carlos Alcaraz. He won at Estoril back in May, but he has not played well since, getting bounced in the first round at Hamburg.

The bottom half of the draw has Dusan Lajovic; the second seed is offering +1400 odds. He was the champion here two years ago (the 2020 version was scrapped due to COVID-19) and made the quarters in 2018. His 2021 play has not been all that solid, but he did make the quarters in Hamburg, where he lost to Pablo Carreno Busta.

Mifel Open

This is the start of the North American hardcourt season, with seven Americans in the main draw but with Cameron Norrie as the top seed. He has won 31 matches at the tour level, reaching three finals in 2021 — but losing all of them. He has beaten five opponents in the ATP top 20, with those wins taking place on all three playing surfaces. No top-20 players are at the Mifel Open, which uses a Solflex surface, one of the slower hardcourts, a surface where Norrie has done well, including a semifinal appearance here in 2018 and in Acapulco (which also uses Solflex) in 2019. Taylor Fritz made the final here two years ago and the final in Acapulco last year, but his 2021 has been weaker than Norrie’s.
